History of Kom Ombo Temple
Built in the Ptolemaic period, under Greek kings, following the tradition of building temples in Ancient Egypt, the temple dates to the 2nd and 1st century BC, and is dedicated to two, quite unusual, gods. Its importance is clear because of its unique structure, and its dedicated position on the banks of the Nile; it's likely, though, that a place of worship existed on the site long before the construction of the temple, during the New Kingdom, and played an important part in the local agriculture, the cult of Sobek being related to fertilty and the Nile. Due to its location on the bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt, near the High Dam of Aswan, the temple has kept its divine importance to this day.
